Good to know

Staying at Mel's Place cabin is a fabulous way to see how easy it is to adjust to off grid life. The whole experience is really a non-issue, but it is probably a little different than what you are used to at home. Most guest say they didn't notice being "offgrid" at all. A few things to know about off grid life in the desert. Water is limited and a very precious resource. There will be plenty for your stay, but please be mindful of your use. (That's the whole idea! ) The electricity is provided by the sun. Due to natural power limitations mainly after dark, please do not bring other appliances (without permission) as overloading the system may cause an inconvenient power failure. **We are asking guests to bring their own queen bed linens & towels when possible. (bed pillows & extra blankets are provided). **We are in a severe drought here & water is even more precious than usual. **If you can't bring your own due to your travel itinerary, no worries! I will provide everything, but... PLEASE CONFIRM EITHER WAY when you book, SO THE CABIN CAN BE PROPERLY PREPARED FOR YOUR STAY** ** IF YOU WILL BE BRINGING YOUR OWN: You will need 4 pillowcases, queen sheets, towels/washcloths. *PROVIDED: kitchen towels, mattress pad, bath mats. **Thank you in advance for your consideration on this matter! **There is great AC and heat and a small, fridge in the kitchen ( no freezer ) **The composting toilet is clean, not gross at all and simple to use. **We look forward to hosting your vacation & introducing you to the magic of Big Bend!!

Other Details to Note

We also have a campground on the property. It's a good distance from the cabin and doesn't affect privacy. The cabin is at the very end of the road on my property, so no one will be driving by.

House Rules

Mel's Place cabin is for 2 adults, 21 yrs old and over, seeking a quiet, peaceful desert experience. No smoking inside No pets No outside visitors without prior permission, please No burning candles or flame of any kind in the cabin. Battery operated candles provided The property is 20 acres which is mostly east and south of the property, towards the Chisos mountains. Feel free to explore it. Please do not harvest any firewood from the land. IMPORTANT: Please be careful not to wander onto my neighbors land to the west. You can see the property line behind the cabin and runs along the driveway. They are unforgiving about accidental trespassers and will call the police. *Please be sure everyone staying understands this. I wouldn't want any of my guests to have a bad experience. The cabin operates on 13 watts of solar power (plenty), and either rain water catchment, or hauled in well water, both are filtered on site. While you will have sufficient power and water for your stay, It is necessary to conserve resources and to be mindful of power and water usage. Thank you. Stay on the roads. The desert eco-system is very fragile and takes years to recover from tire damage, if at all. Note **During the monsoon, or rainy season that can occur in summer, May through September, occasional severe isolated thunderstorms can cause brief flash flooding in the dry creeks/arroyos, which may temporarily keep you from leaving or getting to the property. The dirt road is bentonite clay, which makes it difficult or impossible to drive on when it's wet. It does dry out fairly quickly, usually within hours, but depending on previous rain or cloudy conditions, it may take longer to be passable. We never know how much rain we might get during the "rainy" season as the showers are isolated. Monsoon season takes place during summer here, which is low season. During high season, October through April, the chance for rain is even more rare, but keeping an eye on the forecast before and during your stay is a good idea. I will notify you as well, if any weather is coming that may affect your stay. Please download the airbnb app to your phone so it's easier to receive a text message from me vs an email. The desert is a wild, beautifully harsh untamed place. Be prepared to go with the flow if the weather happens to change. Storms in the desert make stunning photos!

We had a magical stay at Mel’s place from the boho vibes to the tranquility of the desert to amazing stargazing. Melanie was extremely responsive to any questions we had especially considering the remote location. Speaking of being “off grid”, we had good cell service our entire stay at the cabin. The location was perfect- close to Big Bend and Terlingua. The cabin was more spacious than I had expected, and we took advantage of the outdoor shower after long hikes. This was a really special experience, and we would love to come back for another stay!!

This is the 2nd time we’ve stayed at Mel’s Place. It’s an incredible place to stay. You’re close to town and the park, but the location is so private you feel worlds away. The house is small but Mel has thought of everything to make it comfortable. The kitchen is very well stocked for your cooking needs. Make sure to take advantage of the outdoor shower! The views from the cabin are amazing, you can stargaze right from the patio! Highly recommend!

Mel’s cabin was such a wonderful break from car camping. It was clean, cozy, and I felt right at home. The bed was super comfy, and the shower was fantastic! My favorite part was enjoying some Marfa coffee on the porch looking out at the Chisos Mountains in the morning and stargazing at night.

Be prepared for a mile and a half of moderate bumpy dirt roads getting to the cabin once you turn off the highway. A high clearance vehicle is helpful, but your sedan CAN make it, if you are comfortable with the conditions. If it rains (USUALLY June thru Sept. There can be random rain showers at any time), the road may become muddy or even impassable at times, but normally dries up quickly. 4wd can help in those conditions, but it's best to just relax and wait it out. That's what the locals do! Big Bend is always an adventure!
