Composting/outhouse toilet and shower near this site. The shower water is heated by the sun so water will be warmest/hot in mid/ late afternoon. The Cottonwood grocery store a few miles south near the park, has a good selection of groceries and camping supplies. There's 20 acres to explore. Pleaae, don't take the plants or rocks, or anything else that doesn't belong to you. Stay on the property at your own risk, not responsible for accidents, loss. or damages of any kind. **Bring your firewood, or buy it locally. **Collecting vegetation wood or kindling on the property is not permitted. Secure your tent from high winds and critters at night and when you leave for the day. You can not rely on the forecast to predict the winds that can come up in the desert out of nowhere. Never leave your gear, or chairs around the fire pit when you leave or go to bed. Coyotes may steal shoes left outside. Respect the land and leave as good or better than you found it. *Please practice Leave No Trace, Tread Lightly principals. The desert and my property are pristine, please do your part to keep it that way. Thank you in advance! Don't have campfires in windy conditions.. Only have fires in the provided firepit.. Put out your fire completely before bed and before leaving. Keep an eye on the forecast and realize that rain to the north can cause the dry creeks on my property to flash flood and you may not be able to leave till it recedes, which is usually pretty quick, but depends on conditions.The rainy season is during the summer months, usually July through September when not many people are camping anyway. ALWAYS stay aware of the forecast. Weather is a big part of camping!

Access to the campground is a mile and a half of mild to moderate bumpy dirt roads. A sedan can make it just fine as long as you are comfortable with off pavement conditions. Pay attention at night and take your time. No guarantee what your experience with the road conditions will be.

The view of the Chisos mountains is about the best around. Front and center is Emory Peak, the highest point in the national park at 7800 ft. To the left of that is Casa Grande and to the right is the South Rim. Good hiking at Indian Head trail is a mile from my place and has amazing views, interesting rock formations, native American pictographs, etc. Trail is easy and suitable for hiking and mountain bikes.

Hatte einen tollen Aufenthalt!!! Es war zwar etwas weiter vom Big Bend entfernt, aber es hat sich wirklich gelohnt. Wunderschöne Aussicht und die Hängematte war ein tolles Extra – ich war total begeistert, darin zu liegen und die Sterne zu beobachten. Würde definitiv wieder buchen! Had an amazing stay!!! Was a little further out of big bend itself but honestly was so worth it. Gorgeous views and the hammock was an amazing touch I was obsessed with laying on it and watching the stars. Would definitely book again!

Wir haben unseren Aufenthalt auf Melanies Campingplatz sehr genossen. Die Fahrt zum Westeingang des Parks ist kurz und wir würden bei unserem nächsten Big Bend-Besuch definitiv wieder bei ihr übernachten. We loved our stay at Melanie’s campsite. She was kind enough to offer a grill on the site (we brought our own fuel), and we are surprised by the well stocked shower and restroom! It’s a close drive to the west entrance of the Park and we would definitely stay with her again on our next Big Bend trip.

Instructions for finding our campsite were extremely helpful. Amenities provided were above and beyond what was in the description. Tent was very clean and comfortable and Mel has clearly thought of the little things that makes peoples experience that much better like hand wipes in the tent, clear instructions in the bathroom, battery powered lights in the facilities. A very strong option if you’re looking to stay close the park and still want to camp.

Mel war äußerst hilfsbereit bei einer Sendung, die wir per Priority Mail erhalten mussten, was wir sehr zu schätzen wussten. Das bereitgestellte Zelt und die Bettwäsche wurden von meinem Sohn sehr geschätzt (er hat daraus eine Spielburg gebaut). Insgesamt eine hervorragende Erfahrung. Es wäre schön, wenn in Zukunft fließendes Wasser und Strom als Optionen hinzugefügt würden, falls der Gastgeber dies in Erwägung zieht. An excellent location for dark sky photography. Nice clean area, with beautiful views all around. Quick access to Terlingua, BBNP and restaurants/groceries. Mel was so very accommodating for a shipment we needed to receive priority mail, which we greatly appreciated, and the provided tent and bedding was greatly appreciated by my son (who turned it into a fort for play). Overall an excellent experience. Would love to see running water and electricity options added in the future, if the host is open to adding.

Ich war sehr beeindruckt von Mel's Place – die Gestaltung fühlte sich sehr im Einklang mit der trockenen Wüstenumgebung an. Es war einfach und gemütlich, und entsprach genau der Beschreibung. Wir haben direkt neben dem Badezimmer übernachtet und konnten es überhaupt nicht riechen. Leider funktionierte die Dusche während unseres Aufenthalts nicht, aber Mel hat uns darüber sehr gut informiert und Feuchttücher bereitgestellt, die für unsere Zwecke völlig ausreichten. Ich hatte vor Ort vollen Handyempfang. Wir haben unseren Aufenthalt hier wirklich genossen und würden wiederkommen, falls wir nach Big Bend zurückkehren. Ein paar Tipps/Hinweise: Wenn die Tiefsttemperaturen bei etwa 16 °C oder darunter liegen, würde ich einen Schlafsack mitbringen – die bereitgestellten Decken reichen für diese Temperaturen nicht ganz aus. Es gibt nicht viel Schatten, also entweder selbst welchen mitbringen oder nicht erwarten, tagsüber bei großer Hitze viel draußen zu sein. Bringt ausreichend Wasser mit. I was very impressed with Mel's Place- the setup felt very symbiotic with the dry desert environment. It was simple and cozy, and as described. The amenities were basic and nicer than I expected - the bathroom was very clean and had no odors. We stayed at the site right next to the bathroom and could not smell it at all. Unfortunately the shower was not working when we were there, but Mel was very communicative about that and provided wipes which sufficed well enough for our purposes. I had full phone service on site. We really enjoyed our stay here and would stay again if we come back to Big Bend. A few tips/notes: If the lows are in the low 60s or below, I would bring a sleeping bag - the blankets provided are not quite enough for those temperatures. There is not much shade, so either bring shade with you or don't expect to hang out there much during the heat of the day on hot days. Bring plenty of water.
